Salamander Magnesium International Limited (SMI) is single-mindedly driven to convert hazardous environmental challenges into economic opportunities by utilising technologically advanced magnesium recovery operations at magnesite and chrysotile mine tailings facilities around the world, commencing in Southern Africa.
SMI has spent several years developing, perfecting and patenting an environmentally friendly hydro-metallurgical process to extract magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and sulphate (MgSO4) from chrysotile resources, including tailings. This process, which utilises sulphuric acid as its extraction medium, emits no carbon into the atmosphere, and produces silica and gypsum as its residues, both of which are inert and of commercial value.
The technology has also been expanded to magnesite resources and patented.
SMI’s products are produced at a purity level compliant with both British and American Pharmacopoeia and are ideal for ultra-high-grade utilisation.
SMI has concluded a joint venture agreement with Lions Bay Capital Inc. of Canada for the introduction of the technology to magnesite and chrysotile tailings in Canada and Australia.
