Graham Briggs Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Board
Graham Briggs needs little introduction in the mining industry having only recently retired as Chief Executive Officer of Harmony Gold Mining Company. He holds a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Geology and Applied Geology and started his career as Geological Technician for Gencor in 1972 and worked his way up to Chief Geologist of Grootvlei Gold Mine in 1989 and later Ore Reserve Manager for Beatrix Gold Mine in 1992. In 1996 Graham joined Harmony as an executive manager and gained invaluable experience managing projects and operations around the world, including working as CEO of Harmony operations in Canada, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Graham was vice president of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa for two years until 2016. SMI is proud to be able to tap into this wealth of experience.
Lloyd Birrell Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer
The founder and CEO of SMI, Lloyd Birrell (B.Com, B.Proc), is a veteran of the gold mining industry. Originally from the accounting and legal sector, he commenced consulting in the resource sector in 1998, focusing on mastering multidisciplinary skills such as process engineering, underground and surface mining, metallurgy, and geology. Previously Chief Executive Officer of Agnes Mining, director of ASX listed Mintails Limited, Ergo Mining (Pty) Ltd and HVH Gold Mining (Pty) Ltd, Mr Birrell also founded Stonewall Resources and was the Chief Executive Officer between 2010 and 2015. His track record includes successfully acquiring, restructuring, and recommissioning gold assets and restoring them to profitability, includes Ergo (the world’s largest tailings operation), Agnes (now Galaxy), Transvaal Gold Mining Estates (now owned by Theta Mines, listed on the ASX) and Bosveld Mines underground and tailings. In addition to his mining experience, he has extensive experience in the energy industry.
Deon Robbertze Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer
Group CFO, Deon Robbertze, qualified as a Chartered Accountant with an MBA and more than 20 years’ experience at senior financial management levels in the mining industry, including as Financial and Commercial Manager at Kumba Base Metals (now part of Exxaro) and Chief Financial Officer at Xstrata South Africa (now part of Glencore). He has been extensively involved in mining projects in sub-Saharan Africa and as far afield as China and has held director positions on numerous boards globally. His experience includes corporate finance and structuring, project implementation, international tax and global financial reporting.
Theo de Regibus Non-Executive Director
Theo is a director of Titan Corporate Services, a fully licensed Trust and Company Service Provider and the Management Company and Secretaries of SMI. He is a fully approved and qualified Money Laundering Reporting Officer and a fellow of the International Compliance Association. He has over 30 years of experience in the Company and Trust administration sector, specialising in business development with a successful track record in guiding businesses and strengthening management teams to maximise company profitability and efficiency. Prior to joining Titan, Theo was the UK and European Managing Director of The RM Group Limited, established over 40 years ago in the City of London and a supplier of business and financial information through its internet-based service covering 200 million companies in 220 countries.
Tanveer Kawal Non-Executive Director
Tanveer is the Executive Director at Titan Corporate Services Ltd. He holds an Honours Degree in Finance and an MBA. With a decade of professional exposure in the global business industry, he has been significantly involved in areas of finance, fund accounting, business advisory, compliance, and administration. He has built a strong record for advising clients on a wide range of structures, including investment funds and corporate vehicles, on tax planning, corporate structuring and regulatory matters and has extensive technical expertise relevant to the global business industry.
