SMI was incorporated in Mauritius as a Global Business Company on the 30th of March 2016 as Kobolondo Mining International Limited.  It subsequently changed its name to Salamander Magnesium International Limited  to reflect its focus on a wider range of resources and geographies for the production of its magnesium related products.

The primary purpose of the Company, at the time, was to hold the Group’s 50% share in Kobolondo, in the Kingdom of Eswatini which is applying for the mining license over, and to develop the Kobolondo project, situated at Bulembu.

The Company has, since incorporation, been engaged in, and has now completed, the environmental assessment, feasibility study, critical material sourcing and technology development for the Kobolondo project.

The Company achieved a major milestone during 2022 when, after securing the services of experts in the field of magnesium extraction, it developed ground-breaking technology to extract magnesium, in the form of ultra-high grade magnesium sulphate and magnesium hydroxide, from the abandoned Havelock asbestos tailings at Bulembu.  The technology not only helps to rehabilitate a serious environmental risk to the Eswatini environment but leaves an inert silica residue after the extraction of the magnesium.  This technology has been patented.

During the extensive metallurgical testing process, it was proven that the extraction process produces more magnesium hydroxides and sulphates from magnesite (a magnesium carbonate), as opposed to chrysotile (a magnesium silicate).

The group structure is as follows –
